Why Starfield's wonderful map design got so much criticism
Starfield’s map has sparked a lot of debate, but I think much of the criticism is off base. From a UX standpoint, it’s an incredible achievement. The map takes the chaotic, three-dimensional nature of space and flattens it onto a 2D plane, but it never loses that sense of the vastness and scale of the universe. It does this brilliantly by using zoom features that give you cues of where you’re going, showing how far you’ve traveled and where you’re headed compared to where you’ve been. As you zoom in or out, it gives you context, helping you feel connected to the universe while still showing you the grand picture. This allows you to maintain a sense of scale—space still feels endless, but it’s navigable, which is a tricky balance to get right.
Space travel in Starfield is a slow, cumbersome process—and the map reflects that. Unlike some games where you can zoom around the galaxy with ease, Starfield embraces the challenge of space exploration. The map’s design makes the player feel the weight of those long, drawn-out journeys. It’s a reminder that space is vast, and traveling through it won’t be instantaneous. Yes, fast travel is available to save time, but that doesn’t undermine the game’s commitment to realism. The map gives you a sense of the effort involved, which makes it feel more grounded and true to what space travel might actually be like in the near future.
Despite some of its imperfections, the map is visually stunning and a joy to use. It’s not just a tool—it’s an experience. The glowing stars, planets, and paths you chart give the player a sense of wonder, and the tactile joy of zooming around the galaxy makes the map feel interactive in a way that elevates the game. It’s fun to plot your course, uncover new planets, and track your journey across the stars. The map makes you feel like an explorer in a beautifully designed, near-future sci-fi universe. Even if the system isn’t perfect, there’s a real charm in the way it invites you to explore and enjoy the journey through the stars.
